Cameron: "we should never join the euro"

You've got to love it when policy sneaks out in the most unlikely place don't you? In this morning's You Ask the Quesions in the Independent Cameron said, in response to a question about his role as advisor to Norman Lamont that,

The ERM taught me that we should never join the euro.
That should keep Bill Cash et al happy right? Much better than the Government's line which is a continuation of Major's "wait and see" policy for the most part.

The question is will Brown react to it? Brown is not knwn to see mebership as too favourable, but he has played the ditherer line of neither committing nor ruling it out. Can he be as decisive I wonder?

Only when he's cornered.

I find that very disappointing. If the Euro is good for this country and it's economy, of course we should join it. I'm not convinced that at the moment it is, but what sort of an idiot scrapes for votes by ruling out forever something which may be good for our country's economy.

Not half as disappointing as if we had joined the euro when Blair thought it would be good for the economy.

I am against joining the Euro, but I don't see why (apart from political demagoguery) one would wish say 'never'. 'Never' is a big and mostly stupid word and one that conservatives should be wary of using.

The euro will collapse before we sign up for it.

I'lll be sad if the euro collapses: as a tourist I love it!

Who cares that it contributes to hyper inflation in some countries and stagnation in others!

Rock-on!

We have the perfect setup now with the euro - all the benefits of being able to use in on holiday and in business, without our economy being shackled to Germany's and Portugal's.
