I've lost count of the number of Brtiain's in Brown's speech. Got to 26, and as Guido notes, only one mention of Scotland.
Update: Coppers are to get thousands of PDAs so they can log crimes online. Wonder how long it will be before someone cracks into that 3G stream - assuming they can get it too work first.
Update II: Triangulation from the Right which can be summed up as. "Tough on crime. Tough on the immigrant bastards that cause crime"
Update III: Apparently we're going to have super-powerful Matrons back in hospital to tackle MRSA. That soounds familar doesn't it? Almost sopunds like a 2005 Tory manifesto commitment.
Update IV: Just in case the Labour faithful didn't know when to stand up and clap he closes with thw words "I will always stand up for you" . Cue lots of people standing up, cheering, screaming like children, and Gordon looking shifty.

Christ-can you imagine the headlines on the BBC if the Tories had said something along these lines?
Of course, Brown will get away with it. In fact, given the very recent BBC focus on immigration as a legitimate topic, rather than evidence of racism as when the Tories talk about it, I wonder if the speech was leaked to friendly BBC insiders........
Scotland? What' Scotland?
We need more police on the streets not police with the a nifty toy they can play Tetris on to while away the hours. Ugh.
Scotty has finally got control of the Enterprise. Now he's beginning to sweat.
Although he's always banging on about Britain, so many of his policy proposals DO NOT APPLY to Scotland because they are in respect of devolved matters and also because there is an SNP administration in Scotland which is unlikely to jump to GB's command. The same is true to a lesser extent in Northern Ireland and Wales.
So who is he talking to? Middle England? A growing number of people who live in that notional land don't want to be British either. Brown's "Britishness" is a desperate attempt to keep the Labour Party in power at
Westminster, with the aid of votes from Scottish MPS.
I wish a journalist with some guts would challenge him on these points.
Well if NHS staff get iPods ( http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/news/2006/03/post_108.html ) why shouldn't plod get a blackberry!?
Still, one day people will notice that it's our money they are spending and put a stop to it I suppose.
Just hope the good people of Scotland vote him out whenever the general election comes. He is all 'British' now, even lost a lot of his accent, must be the elocution lessons. How wonderful if he lost his Scottish seat, what delicious irony.

Standing up for Britain? standing up for the people? er, isn't that what our politicians and Prime Ministers are supposed to do?
