Ooooh that's a big fire!

So there is a major fire at the moment by the Olmypic site in East London, apparently it's a bus depot (diesel burning?) and the Police say they have no reason to suspect its anything other than a fire (in other words they don't think it's mad jihadists blowing things up).

However, that doesn't stop the cynic in me racing to the surface and wondering whether someone somewhere went "quick, you must get pictures with Canary Wharf and the towers in the background! Think of the imagery!"

Meanwhile, should it turn out to be something other than a fire, how long before someone notes that as 9/11 was also the emergency number 911, so todays date is 12/11 but 11/12 if using American format and the EU wide emergency services number is 112, and then starts screaming about how Nostradamus predicted it too? That is what 'teh Interweb' is for after all.

Update: The Government has just sent out a press release saying that a nationwide poll has found "76 per cent of people are pleased London is staging the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games in 2012". Presumably the other 24% are currently arson suspects and the Government will be examining Swan Vesta sales figures for this morning.

Looks like just a regular warehouse fire, and Gordon was all primed to look all statesmanlike and claw back a few points in those pesky opinion polls. D'oh

What does "76% of people" mean? I presume the sensible people of Paris, Frankfurt etc etc are included in that number.

You should be worried your able to think like this ...

However ... its odd when so many details aren't available that the emergency services are able to rule out terrorism. Damn you've got me doing it now.

And there was me thinking that the whole point of using asbestos was because it didn't burn?

Is a Swan Vesta the arsonist's match of choice?

I can see the benefits of being able to strike it anywhere, but they're harder to strike than safety matches and the box is a little larger.

It bears thinking about. Any arsonists should feel free to contribute their expert opinion.

I saw Seb Coe running around with some petrol and matches this morning. Probably has nothing to do with it. It's a shame that the fire will have knocked so much off the value of the land.

Presumably Deborah Mattinson did that poll - I live in East London, and know no-one who is in favour of the Olympics being here.

what's the betting that the warehouse was the one in the middle of the Olympic site that wouldn't sell up....

That 15 billion pound insurance policy should come in handy.

Oh bugger, seems Tessa forgot to post the acceptance letter.

I'm dad against the Games for London, and everyone I know is against the idea.
Paris would have been ideal. Attractive City, they'd bear the cost and we could watch it on the tele at a reasonable hour.
By the way, very few people will see events live in this country. Athletics finals will cost a bomb; Micky Mouse events will be poorly attended or best left to tele highlights.
We wouldn't have got the Games without Blair's late intervention - another reason to curse his legacy.

I know you are not stuck for a story, but here goes anyway!

The NZ Lairbour govt have introduced a bill, which, if passed, would help ensure they remain in power. It is such a serious issue that the largest daily ran with a rare front page editorial. The fuckers are the same the world over:

Do the people of Glasgow have to pay a precept for winning the 2014 Commonwealth Games?
