Australia to censor the Internet

Well Kevin Rudd is a socialist so what's the surprise? The Australian Government is going to make it mandatory for all service [providers to filter out porn and "inapproriate content". People will be allowed to "opt-out" but that will of course just make me the Government say "hmmm is that person watching Kiddy Porn?". The Telecommunications Minister Stephen Conroy said

"Labor makes no apologies to those that argue that any regulation of the internet is like going down the Chinese road... If people equate freedom of speech with watching child pornography, then the Rudd-Labor Government is going to disagree."
See that? Anyone who argues against the policy is really a secret kiddie fiddler.... class! He also said,
"There are people who are going to make all sorts of statements about the impact on the [internet] speed... The internet hasn't ground to a halt in the UK, it hasn't ground to a halt in Scandinavian countries and it's not grinding the internet to a halt in Europe.
What does the UK have to do with anything? There is no Government legislation that requires ISPs to filter content, so the comparison is frankly complete nonsense. The key here aswell is that this is not about just child porn, this is about filtering out all pornography and other sites that the Government of a supposedly liberal and free democracy have decided people are not allowed to see by default. If they want to look they have to apply, and once they do that the "Pervert Alert" flag will no doubt be raised.

We’ll be safe, Dizzy. We’ll just use the same human rights act that allows prisoners access to porn magazines.

Sounds like I'm Alan Partridge when he rings receptions and says 'can you put pornography on my television please'

A recent EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation) article called on the EU to censor the internet, though this appears to be for purely commercial reasons. I posted on it here (http://quietmanmyblog.blogspot.com/2007/12/eu-and-internet-censorship.html)
Though it does seem only a matter of time before the "Free" west goes down the 1984 road.
I do despair at times.

It will get worse. Tech is now allowing the march of totalitarianism to enter western 'democracy'. It was a brief period of history where 'freedom' raised its head and said 'hi'.

Just the same arguments currently going through the debates & committee stages of the Criminal Justice & Immigration Bill in the UK....New labour censorship using child pornography as the catch-all trump card against anyone opposing them.

Free thought...not under Cromwell Brown and his pals.

Given just how recently he was elected, I'm gonna work under the assumption that this was a manifesto pledge and the people of Australia were able to use this information when deciding who to vote for????
