At last something the Government has succeeded at something. Apparently since 2001 the Department for International Development has spent £91.5 million on promoting 'alternative livelihoods to the drugs trade' in Afghanistan.
Clearly money well spent with a massive reduction in the opium yields and international smack market. Just look at how the street price has gone up for heroin thanks to the Government's clear success at reducing supply - shurely shome mistake? Aren't yields up and prices down? Ed.

That's, err, only £389 per UK heroin addict. Bargain.
Isn't that £91m that might have been more useful spent on the squaddies out there doing a difficult job made harder by Government penny-pinching?
At £91m per lie, this government will bankrupt the country in no time.
Or thinking outside the box why not use a fraction of the money to buy the crop from the farmers to address the shortage of morphine for medical supply?
Although thinking about it any government department implementing something that might actually be self financing is just too absurd for words. Sorry for being so silly.
When will the government learn that economic matters cannot be changed by education/brain washing? If Afghans make more money by selling opium paste than they can by other menas, then they will always be growing poppies.
They might as well try to lecture water on alternatives to flowing downhill.
